“Recycle today for a better tomorrow”: that is the slogan of Paper Link Ltd, a company which specializes in waste and recycling. Created in 2012 and located in Riche Terre, Paper Link collects paper and carton wastes all around Mauritius. The founder, Ludovic Henry has a degree in environmental science. Being both firm adherents to the “Nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything is transformed” principle, Ludovic Henry cheerfully answers to the interview of CM Online, a social media management company.
CM Online: Hello Ludovic, can you tell us about your professional career.
Ludovic Henry: After my degree in England in environmental science, I started working for an NGO called Reef Conservation in marine protection. Then I moved to Medine (Sugar Estate) who specializes in waste management, plant protection and in helping the development of organic farming. The lack of waste recovery in Mauritius has led me to develop Paper Link.
CMO: Why are you so interested in environment and waste management?
Ludovic: Waste does not exist in nature. It seems that I was always connected to the environment with a prolonged respect for it. This made me want to alleviate the impact that humans are having on it. One thought lead to another, and to me, the most visual impact on the environment would be the waste disregarded by human.
CMO: Actually, how would you evaluate waste management in Mauritius?
Ludovic: Huge efforts are needed from the authorities, private sector and the citizen. 450,000 tons of waste are discarded at landfills on a yearly basis. Legislation needs to be put in place in order to reduce waste products and channel their disposal in the right direction. We need to also promote the value of those by-product generated through recycling. These will subsequently create opportunities and mitigate the lack of space generated by waste disposal. We should remind ourselves that Mauritius is a small country in desperate need of space. The presence of landfills is not helping that.
CMO: What is the main activity of your company and what are your ambitions for this year?
Ludovic: Paper Link Ltd specializes in the sorting, collecting and baling paper of cardboard and plastic wastes. We recover 5000 tons of materials every year. The company is involved in the collection of waste and the destruction of confidential archives of private companies for recycling. Our goal is to increase the collect and diversify it to others materials. With help of the government, we want develop some reduction and recycling waste programs. Improving the current existing infrastructure is essential to the success of our mission.
CMO: Who are your partners?
Ludovic: We have some partners who help us to develop our activity: Local print shops (like Dakri Cartons), waste collectors, NGO’s private (like Mission Verte), public sectors, offshore companies and some industries.
CMO: Regarding the communication and marketing, what are your priorities for Paper Link?
Ludovic: With the help of CM Online, we want Mauritians to get to know us a little bit more. We want to make our activities more visible through our website and the social media in general. People need to know that we are here. They need to know that we are willing to help companies to find out innovative ways to manage and reduce waste reduction. It can be done through recycling programmes.
CMO: What about the future of recycling in Mauritius?
Ludovic: We need to recycle in order to protect the environment, the country and the planet altogether. It is essential. One might say that it is even unavoidable given that we shall have no choice but adopt it eventually. The quality of our lives will largely depend on the quality of the environment.
